Pre-deliberative phase

A pre-deliberative workshop was organized in April 2024 with 12 students. At the end of this workshop, a list of topics was decided for the students’ assembly. Among the topics identified: AI determinism, students’ vision on the future of AI, the lack of interdisciplinary training for AI engineers, and finally, the undefined stance of EFI on AI. This last topic was the one selected.

A Pol.is survey was also set up for the pre-deliberative phase. Students voted on a series of statements around the question “What do you think of the role of AI in HE?”. This helped map out the potential disagreements in the assembly members. Two opinion groups were formed based on voting dynamics. A series of semi-structured interviews with experts from the UoE was also conducted to inform the content of the SA.

Deliberative phase

This phase was the two-day students' assembly. Although its design can remain quite flexible, this phase involved 3 phases: a learning phase, a deliberative phase and a decision-making phase. The learning phase is provided a wide range of expert evidence and theory on GenAI use in HE while the deliberative and decision-making phases were dedicated to working on a common output.

Six sessions were organized.

Session 1: Lived experiences of using GenAI in learning, teaching and research
The first session started with two presentations: lessons learned from an experimentation with GenAI in teaching and in learning. Members of the SA then engaged in an open discussion about their recent GenAI uses. They looked into their GenAI history, and mapped the various ways in which they used GenAI in their learning, teaching and research experiences. The uses were clustered in 7 categories: personal development, critical review, simplification, proof-reading, language, planning, and miscellaneous.

Implementation phase

Members of the students' assembly have produced a final list of principles for the use of GenAI in HE. This list has been sent out to EFI management with the goal to integrate the students' principles in the institute's formal guidelines on the use of GenAI.
